ConnectArte: Artifacts from Greater Nicoya, C.R.

For Members, For The Public

Join us for the Arts of the Ancient Americas Lecture Series. This lecture will be about the Bounties of the Earth: Pre-Columbian Jade, Gold, and Stone from Greater Nicoya by Dr. Carrie Dennett, Red Deer Polytechnic, Alberta, Canada.

Nestled at the very southern extent of the greater Mesoamerican culture area in Pacific Nicaragua and northwest Costa Rica, the Pre-Columbian peoples of Greater Nicoya did not construct massive temples or ball courts like their neighbors to the north. Rather, they are perhaps best known for their artistic skill and craftsmanship in durable materials from the earth such as clay, stone, and metal. On this lecture we will explore some magnificent art objects from the region – in particular, jade pendants, gold ornaments, and stone spheres – as well as delving into the ‘mysteries’ of their manufacture and probing the potential social and cosmological concepts with which they were imbued by their crafters.

Cost: $10 for general public, FREE to members of Museo or Amigos
