LXS JOVENES LEADERSHIP LAB SUMMER 2023

Lxs Jovenes Leadership Lab summer session focused on exploring the concept of identity through different types of mediums. During this intensive two week program, the students learned how to manipulate and create ceramics, figure draw, 3D jewelry modeling, photography technique and social skills.

WORKSHOPS

Sculpture workshops

These workshops were led by Kit Bollag-Miller and Maria Morera. During these sessions the students learned how to model clay using different types of techniques and tools. They learned about body proportions, sculpting and time management.  They also experienced working in teams to create a story, develop characters and designing a set for their story.

Figure drawing

In this workshop the students worked along with the artist Kaitlyn Tucek. This workshop had the goal of exposing students to art as a profession and answer some questions about her medium, her academic background and some advice for the students as young artists. She guided them into learning about human proportions, creative freedom and new art materials. During one hour and a half, the students got to draw two 2 minute body poses and 2 10 minute body poses. This exercise challenged them to be creative and let their creativity flow. After that, they refined their pieces with painting.

Photography

This workshop was led by Daniel Vaughan, a photographer and filmmaker. The students learned the different components of photography, set setting, lighting and angles. They also got the opportunity to go out into the neighborhood and practice those skills with the guidance of Daniel.

Mixed media

This workshop was led by Cherish Marquez, a mixed media artist. Cherish shared their experience in the local artist field mixing their knowledge of technology and combining it with activism. The students got to learn how to do embroidery and to use led light circuits.

FIELD TRIPS

Atlas Institute

Thanks to the partnership of Museo de las Americas with Atlas Institute, we were able to do a field trip to CU Boulder and spend the day at Atlas Institute. We were hosted  by Dr Shaz Zamore. They led a 3D modeling session where the students learned how to design jewelry and later on 3D print it. We also received an extensive tour of the installations to promote inspiration to students.

MSU Center for Visual Arts

With the intention of having the students be more exposed to different types of art and practice their artistic skills, we did a final field trip to MSU Center for Visual Arts. The activity was to explore all the art pieces in the center, choose a favorite one and try to sketch it using their knowledge acquired in the figure Drawing workshop.

Boys and Girls Club

We partnered with the Boys and Girls Club and they joined us for one day. During that day they explored Museo, worked with the other students to create a fictional story and develop it through a clay workshop.
